Weekly Assignments

In this module, participants will review the CDA credentialing process, course syllabus, create an account on the CDA council website, review professional portfolio requirements and discuss what they hope to learn in upcoming weeks.

A teacher's actions in the classroom are influenced by their training and life experiences. Writing out their teaching philosophies helps educators understand their beliefs and allows them to become more aware of biases within themselves and major child development theories. It also improves their teaching and communication with families and other people. Teachers need to know why they do what they do. In this module, we discuss how to be intentional with children's education. Participants will learn about some of the major child development theories and also write a professional philosophy statement for their CDA professional portfolio.

This week, participants will learn how to create a supportive classroom environment based on Maslow's hierarchy of needs, which is important for helping children reach higher levels of learning according to Bloom's taxonomy. They will cover topics like emergency procedures, safety, supervision, health, nutrition, hand washing, diaper changing, classroom setup, and cleanliness. Participants will complete assignments that include making a sample weekly lesson plan, menu, daily schedule, and a reflection on how they keep their classroom safe and healthy for their CDA professional portfolio.

This week, participants will explore how to create a classroom that supports both physical and intellectual growth, focusing on the connection between brain development and physical activity. They will learn about the importance of play, how to incorporate movement into daily routines, and activities that enhance coordination, balance, and sensory processing. Participants will complete assignments, including writing a reflection on how they advance physical and intellectual competence in their classroom for their CDA professional portfolio, and designing nine learning activities that promote different types of development, such as gross motor skills, fine motor skills, sensory exploration, music and movement, outdoor play, cognitive skills, creative expression, language development, and simple science experiments.
